INTRODUCTION         

            The Mariani College established in 1966, Assamese Department also existed from the same year. Under Graduate classes introduce from 1967. The Arts secton along with this Department came under defcit system on 01.02.1975. the Commerce Section introduced in 1975 and The Science Section introduced in 1992 . Major Course in Assamese introduced in 1992-93.

            Assamese is a major Indian language and it is recognized in the schedule VIII of the honourable constitution of India. The Assamese language and its variations are used in whole North East India, and in some parts of Myanmer as a lingua franca. More than 5 to 6 crores comprising above people use, understand this language . Moreover this language in the earlier from has a heritage of about ten centuries. Therefore methodological study and research of this language is of utmost important. This department, therefore, teachers this language with zeal and vigour. 

INFRASTRUCTURE/DEPARTMENTAL LIBRARY

            The Department has its own room along with a departmental library. the Departmental Library has about 1000 books for ready reference and for students also. There is a very old manuscript written in Sanchipat. This is collectrd to give students actual feelings of the books that were there in the ols days as well as to show the letters written in those days and to encourage the students to take calligraphy as an added skill.

The Assamese Department is comprising Three permanent Teacher and One Part time Teacher:
